Top 10 Discipleship Scriptures

by Pastor Sam Kahn

After scouring the web and careful thought here are the top ten discipleship scriptures.

Note: A Google search for scriptures about discipleship produced a long list of websites and in some cases websites had a long list of scriptures.  I took the first five websites (see list below) that showed on after searching and one of the sites had a list of 112 scriptures.

The order of discipleship scriptures are based on the most appearances on those five sites. Matthew 28:18-20 was listed five times and Matthew 4:19-20 was listed three times.

I pray that these scriptures will be useful and produce abundant fruit in the lives of those that read this article.  Please take time to read each one of these and let God's living word soak into your minds and hearts.

God Bless
Pastor Sam Kahn

1. Matthew 28:18-20

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

(Matthew 28:18-20 ESV)

2. John 13:34-35

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

(John 13:34-35 ESV)

3. John 15:1-17
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit uhe takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

4. Luke 14:33

So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

(Luke 14:33 ESV)

5. Luke 9:23

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

(Luke 9:23 ESV)

6. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

(2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV)

7. Ephesians 4:11-17

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.

(Ephesians 4:11-17 ESV)

8. Luke 6:40

A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.

(Luke 6:40 ESV)

9. Matthew 16:24-25

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

(Matthew 16:24-25 ESV)

10. Matthew 4:19-20

And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him.

(Matthew 4:19-20 ESV)
