At a recent retreat, my friend Sammye shared that she didn’t want to come until she had called her friend Betty for a ‘Betty Booster.’ Wondering what a ‘Betty Booster’ was, I listened carefully as she went on to explain that she calls Betty when she needs a lift or a little encouragement.

I then realized that we all need ‘Betty Boosters’ in our lives. Friends who will guide, lose, care, and cheer us during the trials and difficulties of the journey of life.

“Boost” is a transitive verb which means the following: 1. To improve, strengthen, or encourage somebody; 2. To cause someone to increase; 3. To help another person get up or over something by giving a push from below.

Are you helping someone up and over the mountains of life? Do you desire someone like that to push you from behind so that you can forge ahead? Are you connecting with others each and every day, causing others to increase?

When I need a lift, I call my mentors, Lots of Love LeMire and Joyous Jane, to encourage me in my journey. I also have Kindhearted Kathy and Prayerful Pleticha in Seattle, both with listening hearts. I am blessed to have Inspirational Irene and Supportive Stephanie only a phone call away, while Considerate Kathleen, Wonderful Wendy, and Listening Lori are right here in town! WOW! I am blessed to have so many ‘Betty Boosters’ in my life, but I don’t want only to have Betty Boosters in my life, I want to be one.

I don’t want to be Danika Discourager, Gloomy Glenda, or Miserable Mary. These people tend to drain us, while leaving us questioning ourselves. Although sometimes we can be the Bossy Betty, the Pushy Patty, or the Neglectful Nancy, the choice is ours. It is possible to change our names, you know, and we don’t have to pay the usually $40 at the clerk’s office because it is free. It is a decision we make to intentionally reach out to assist others in the task of going through life.

I want to be Danika the Intentional. (Who says our names have to start with the same letter?) I want to boost friends (and strangers) so that they increase in character, actions, and attitude.

How about you? What’s your name? Are you a Betty Booster, and Emily Encourager, a Compassionate Carin, a Tender Tammy, or a Reassuring Rhonda? Are you a Prayerful Pamela, an Inspiring Inga, or a Merciful Mary? In the business of life, we all need to encourage and be encouraged; to increase, boost, and push others from behind as we support and strengthen one another in love. So go for it! Change your name and change lives. Be intentional as you help and guide others in the journey of life.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”

Hebrews 10:24 (NIV)

“Therefore encourage each other and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV)
